Good news for Omani travelers – your passport just became more powerful. In the latest Henley Passport Index released for the first half of 2025, Oman climbed four spots to 56th place globally. That ranking translates into greater freedom of movement, with Omani citizens now enjoying visa-free access to 88 destinations around the world.
Last year, Oman’s passport holders could travel to 86 countries without needing a visa in advance. The new total of 88 may not seem like a huge jump, but the destinations added this year make the change especially significant. Two of the world’s largest countries – China and Russia – have recently eased entry rules for Omanis, opening up major new travel and business opportunities.
In May, China announced that nationals from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain would be exempt from entry visas starting in June. This decision extended a policy that citizens of the UAE and Qatar have benefited from since 2018. For Omanis, it means simpler trips for business, study, or leisure, whether that’s walking the Great Wall, exploring Shanghai, or pursuing trade ties with one of the world’s largest economies.
Then in July, a new chapter began with Russia. A mutual visa exemption agreement between the two countries took effect on July 18, allowing short-term visits without prior visas. For Omani travelers, this opens the door to Moscow’s cultural highlights, St. Petersburg’s heritage, and easier access for business, education, and tourism.
The Henley Passport Index, powered by International Air Transport Association (IATA) data, is widely seen as the benchmark for measuring passport strength. Rankings are based on the number of destinations a passport holder can access without securing a visa beforehand. Oman’s rise from 60th place in 2024 to 56th this year reflects its strengthening international connections and the growing ease with which its citizens can travel.
For everyday travelers, the impact is straightforward: fewer forms, less waiting, and more flexibility when planning a trip. Business professionals can take advantage of smoother access to key markets, students can explore study options abroad with fewer barriers, and leisure travelers gain the freedom to explore new destinations with minimal hassle.
With 88 countries now open visa-free, the Omani passport is stronger than ever. For those eager to explore new horizons, it’s an encouraging sign that travel is becoming easier, connections are expanding, and opportunities are growing. The world is opening up a little wider for Omani citizens – and all it takes is a passport in hand.
